1974 Album Is Named Jackson Browne’s Best of All Time

It’s hard to construct a playlist of the best music the 1970s had to offer without including Jackson Browne. One of the most successful and revered singer-songwriters of the decade, Browne is known for deeply personal lyrics—“Doctor, my eyes have seen the years / And the slow parade of fears without crying”—and thoughtful social commentary showcased through a distinctive blend of rock and folk music that makes his songs unmistakably his own.

Jackson Browne’s more than five-decade career helped define the Southern California sound that dominated the 1970s folk-rock music genre. Browne’s catalog of hits, from “Doctor My Eyes” to “Somebody’s Baby,” dominated the ’70s and ’80s charts, leading to a parade of memorable songs from the iconic music star. Browne’s 1974 release Late for the Sky, however, is American Songwriter’s pick for the very best Jackson Browne album of all time. Here’s why:

“Is this ever a brutally difficult choice? The debut album suffers a bit because of the murkiness of the sound. Meanwhile, The Pretender might have the opposite problem in that it’s too chipper. Running On Empty sticks pretty heavily to one topic throughout, even though it exhausts every bit of insight from it. For our money, you just can’t top Late For The Sky, a gorgeous, bittersweet triumph whose relevance and potency never seem to fade.”

American Songwriter’s take on Browne’s best all-time album is shared by many. Late for the Skyis often considered the singer’s artistic peak, though some suggest Jackson Browne never truly peaked and instead continued to build on his own work throughout his career.
