Bruce Willis’s wife Emma admits feeling ‘guilt’ over turning 50 as he lives with dementia

Emma Heming Willis has opened up about “always carrying” guilt amid her husband Bruce Willis’s dementia struggles, saying that she didn’t feel like celebrating her 50th birthday as a result.

Heming Willis married the Die Hard actor in 2009, with the couple now parents to daughters Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12. In recent years, the British-American model has been an advocate for raising awareness of aphasia and frontotemporal dementia, which 71-year-old Willis was diagnosed with in 2022 and 2023.

In a new interview, Heming Willis revealed that she was torn over whether to mark her recent 50th birthday in June, saying that she has “not really been in the celebratory feelings of late”.

“I was unsure if I really wanted to do anything, but I had a friend of mine who kept sort of pushing me and saying, ‘You know what, you don't want to miss out on your 50. You have to celebrate in some form or fashion.’ And I really sat with that and I thought about it,” she told Hoda Kotb on her Making Space podcast.

She added that she “always wrestles” with guilt, adding: “I think guilt is something that I am always carrying, but I've learned that it is really not helpful.

“I always go back to: what would my husband want for me?” she continued. “And he would want me to have a big, fun bash. He would want me to celebrate my life with my friends and family. And that is sort of what I always think about when guilt of any sort comes in front of me.”

Heming Willis ultimately celebrated her birthday with a party after all, with her mother and friends organising the bash. “They said, 'What are a couple of things that you want?’ I said, ‘I want to eat tacos and I want to have a margarita. And I wanna be with my friends,’” she said.

“I'm really happy that I did We brought together my friends, some family, and it was just a really lovely, intimate night.”

Since Willis’s dementia diagnosis, his wife has shared updates on his health and how it has affected their family. In January, she said that the actor “doesn’t know” that he has the degenerative disease as one of the neurological symptoms includes anosognosia – which prevents a person from accurately recognising their own illness.

“People think this might be denial, like they don't want to go to the doctor because they're like, ‘I'm fine, I'm fine,’ actually, this is the anosognosia that comes into play,” Heming Willis explained. “It's not denial. It's just that their brain is changing. This is a part of the disease.”

Last year, Heming Willis moved her husband out of their family home as his condition became progressively worse. She said in August: “Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.” He currently lives with a full-time care team in a one-storey home.

Earlier this year, Willis’ eldest daughter, Rumer Willis, wished her dad a happy birthday by celebrating classic scenes from his best-known films, while his ex-wife Demi Moore also shared a post on Instagram to mark his 71st birthday.

Willis and Moore were married from 1987 until 1998, with the pair sharing daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 35, and Tallulah, 32.
