Fans of Chad Michael Murray are reacting to an old yearbook photo taken of the star before he underwent surgery for his nose

In 2004, he made it clear to Entertainment Weekly that the procedure was not a "nose job" but necessary for recovery

If you thought you knew all there is to know about Chad Michael Murray, think again.

In recent weeks, fans of the heartthrob actor, now 44, are finding themselves surprised that he underwent corrective surgery for his nose before he rose to fame.

A photo of the One Tree Hill alum from what is believed to be 1999 is circulating online and shows how the surgery altered his previous appearance to the one fans know today.

"You could have given me 100 guesses and I still wouldn't have said [that was] Chad Michael Murray. He looks so different," one person wrote on X, with another adding, "So I have been bamboozled this whole time."

Although a lot of people may think the rom-com star looks dramatically different now compared to then, that was never his intention when he underwent surgery as a teen. "It wasn't a nose job — I hate the fact that people say it was a nose job!” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2004.

Murray was actually "jumped" by three guys in a Burger King when he was 18, which ended with his nose on "the other side" of his face, he recalled, adding, "the doctors didn't even bother running X-rays. They just reset it."

In an August 2025 interview with Newsweek, Murray said that his appearance post-operation felt foreign even to him. "I don't like my nose because it's not my nose." He had many moments during his early career when he felt "uncomfortable" in his own skin.

"I think it's not just if you're an actor, it's everybody. Like our 20s are fricking hard, man. And the 20s are for screwing up, figuring out who you are, and then you go into your 30s, and 30s are awesome. I mean, for me anyway, I thought it was an awesome decade."

It's safe to say that Murray may not even know his looks are a hot topic again, since he doesn't like to read any comments about himself. He told Newsweek, "I don't know how people interpret me. I don't really think about it. I hope I can be a conduit of light and love. And that's really all I want to be. And I'm not in this for really any other reason."
