Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt reveals the sweet thing she and husband Chris Pratt would do when they first started dating in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE

The bestselling author and the actor began a romantic relationship in 2018 and have been married since 2019

Katherine has partnered with Hallmark for the greeting card company's Valentine's Day collection

Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt and Chris Pratt had a sweet way of showing their admiration for each other right at the start of their relationship.

"Chris and I, when we first started dating, and he would leave to go film or go on location, we wrote each other handwritten cards," the bestselling author, 39, tells PEOPLE exclusively, recalling when she and her husband's romance began in 2018.

"We would sometimes mail them, but I would also put them in his bag, or he would leave them on the counter," Katherine — who has partnered with Hallmark ahead of Valentine's Day — continues.

"They have always been really beautiful, and I have, of course, kept all of those," she adds. "I have a whole collection of cards from Chris."

A year after they started dating, Katherine and Chris, 46, got married in June 2019 during an intimate ceremony in Montecito, Calif.

The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Lyla Maria, in 2020, and daughter Eloise Christina followed in 2022. In 2024, the couple welcomed a son, Ford Fitzgerald. (Chris is also a dad to 13-year-old son Jack, whom he shares with ex-wife Anna Faris.)

According to Katherine, she is "grateful" to be married to Chris for many reasons, one of which is having "someone who brings humor in challenging times."

"Then, also just knowing that we're teammates in so much of life, especially parenting, which has its ups and downs," adds the Kat and Brandy author.

Katherine's love of love is front and center in her partnership with Hallmark for the greeting card company's Valentine's Day collection. (Some romantic cards this year include the You Make Life Beautiful Love Card and the We Were Meant to Be Card, as well as momentos like the A Year of Date Nights Idea Jar and the You & Me picture frame.)

"Now, more than ever, when you receive a handwritten card — whether it's a thank-you card, a birthday card, a sympathy card, a just because card or a Valentine's Day card — it's that much more special, because it's like, 'Wow, somebody really took time to sit down, write something and not type it or voice note it,' " Katherine says. "It lands totally differently now with the crazy, busy and chaotic lives that we all live."

The Global Ambassador for the Special Olympics tells PEOPLE her love of greeting cards came from an important person in her life: mom Maria Shriver. (The journalist, 70, shares Katherine, plus daughter Christina Schwarzenegger and sons Patrick Schwarzenegger and Christopher Schwarzenegger, with ex-husband Arnold Schwarzenegger.)

"My mom is really big on manners, so handwritten thank-you cards have always been, and continue to be, a huge part of my life," she explains. "So when I heard about working with Hallmark, it was the most perfect thing ever, because this is such a big thing for me and my family, and now, as a parent, I can also teach the importance of that to my kids."
