Martha Stewart doesn’t think about age. “I really and truly don’t!” she says.

“Eighty-five is just a number,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “That’s all I consider it.”

Stewart turned the milestone age on Aug. 3 and didn’t want a party. “People are giving me parties,” she clarifies. “It’s not a big deal.”

She does think about taking care of herself. “I have good genes. My mom looked great at 95,” she admits. “We eat well. We don’t drink very much. We don’t smoke. We eat healthy food. We exercise daily.”

Horseback-riding is one of her favorite activities. “It’s the nicest way to spend a few hours riding a horse, especially on your own farm,” she says. “You can really look around and see things from a different vantage point.”

For cosmetic procedures, she sees Dr. Dan Belkin in New York City. “He is a very superb dermatologist,” she says. “And I use a little bit of fillers. I go maybe once every four months for touch-ups.”

She also uses products from her new Elm Biosciences skincare line. “It is a effective, efficacious, well-designed, beautifully scientific skincare line,” she says. (She’ll add a lip serum to the lineup this fall.)

Despite what people think, “I have not had any plastic surgery at all,” she says. “I don’t think I need it. I do facial exercises and have the best facials from Mario Badescu and Georgia Louise. Peptides are very good. I take a few peptides.”

“So that’s what I do. I’m more a maintenance kind of person. I’m not getting boobs done and hips and butts and stuff like that,” she adds with a laugh.

Stewart, who grew up the second-oldest of six children, started modeling in high school to make extra money for her family. “I liked posing for pictures,” she says. “My dad had actually taught me how to do that. He was a very good photographer.”
