Mary Trump on Wednesday suggested there may be a family explanation for why her uncle, Donald Trump, gets so little sleep.
Appearing on MS NOW’s “The Beat,” the president’s niece said her grandfather, Fred Trump, “needed very little sleep” and was “just one of those people” who could get by on four or five hours a night.
Fred Trump, the president’s late father, was a “very healthy person” who didn’t drink, do drugs or smoke and maintained a good diet, noted the clinical psychologist, who has long been a vocal critic of her uncle.

“But he also gave his children the message that needing sleep was weakness and being weak was not something anybody could ever allow themselves to be thought of,” she said. “I think Donald took that to heart and feels that, in order to be a tough guy, he needs to get by on very little sleep.”
But Trump himself is “not healthy,” she argued, citing his “excessive” Diet Coke consumption and his age, which she claimed affect “his ability to stay awake during the day, to focus.”
Although Trump has not been diagnosed with a cognitive condition, his niece argued the sleep issue forms part of a broader pattern that includes what she described as apparent dozing at public events and a loss of impulse control.

Trump has previously boasted about his lack of sleep, claiming he survives on just three or four hours per night. Fox News’ Sean Hannity is among a number of MAGA allies to recall receiving late-night calls from the president.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier this year revealed how he hides from Trump onboard Air Force One, to nap.

“There’s an office with two couches, and I usually want to sleep on one of those two couches,” Rubio told New York Magazine. “But what I do is I cocoon myself in a blanket. I cover my head. I look like a mummy.”
It’s because “I know that at some point on the flight, he’s going to emerge from the cabin and start prowling the hallways to see who is awake,” he said.
