Netflix CEO reveals why Mindhunter never got a Season 3, and David Fincher is the key reason

Mindhunter has been among the most talked-about shows even after its cancellation. While several global hits, such as Alice in Borderland, have been cancelled by the streaming platform, the psychological crime thriller is one of those that hurt most, as no one expected the show's cancellation.

David Fincher, the most frequent director and executive producer of the series, has multiple times stated that budget constraints were the main reason for Mindhunter not returning for Season 3. However, according to Collider, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently stated in an event with The Indian Express that Fincher's "busy schedule" was the reason. He said:

"Mindhunter, David Fincher’s series on Netflix. We always anticipated there would be a third season, and he got very busy making a film."

Mindhunter premiered on Netflix in October 2017 and Season 2 was released in 2019. With only 2 seasons and 19 episodes, the thriller series became one of the most successful Netflix shows. It followed the story of FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Holt McCallany's Bill Tench.

Together, they worked for the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit and interviewed notorious serial killers across the US to understand the psychology of the criminals, which might in turn help them catch future serial killers. The series introduced several infamous criminals such as Edmund Kemper, Richard Speck, and Charles Manson.

Season 2 ended with the closure of the Atlanta case, leaving Ford unsatisfied as he still believed the case was unsolved. Furthermore, the BTK killer was also still at large. These cliffhangers left viewers anticipating another season, which initially was to be released, but as time went by, the Netflix series never returned for Season 3.

EP David Fincher cited finance as the most important reason for the show's cancellation. In a 2023 interview with Forbes, he stated:

"I'm very proud of the first two seasons. But it's a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment."

However, Ted Sarandos' latest interview suggests something entirely different. He did not mention anything about budget issues. In The Indian Express event, when asked about a movie that should've gotten a sequel, the Netflix CEO named Mindhunter. He revealed that the crime thriller was one of the shows that should have returned with a Season 3. However, instead of a budget, Sarandos pointed out that Fincher's schedule was the main reason the series never returned, as he was doing a movie at the time.

He further stated:

"And David is an unbelievably meticulous creator, so he couldn’t do two things at the same time, and he certainly didn’t want to short-change either one. So it just got pushed off and pushed off. I would have loved to have seen a third season of Mindhunter."
