Odyssey Star Reveals the Family Tragedy She’s Still Processing

Samantha Morton, the 45-year-old actress who plays the character ‘Circe’ in Christopher Nolan‘s film The Odyssey, recently revealed the deep trauma that she continues to live with after the passing of her sister.

In an interview, she opened up about how her childhood traumas and personal experiences have prepared her to portray the mythical sorceress and goddess in the movie.

Samantha Morton reflected on losing her sister earlier this year and the ongoing emotional toll

In the interview with The Times, Morton described her difficult upbringing, childhood abuse and parting parents. She shared that her 53-year-old sister died on April 22 this year, and that she is still coping with the aftermath. Her sister’s death came about 18 months after she lost her father. “Trauma is a constant battle.”, she mentioned.

Born in a family where her father spent time in prison and her mother suffered from mental illness, she spent most of her time in foster care, children’s homes, and homeless hostels. She also revealed that she was sexually abused by two caregivers in the hostel when she was just 11 years old.

The two-time Academy Award nominee went on to say, “I have made choices that have always been about survival, because I watched my mum trying to survive and I watched my dad trying to survive.”

In another interview with the Guardian in 2009, Morton revealed her arrest at the age of 14, after threatening to kill a girl who had allegedly bullied her for a long time. Authorities initially charged Morton with attempted murder, but the court ultimately convicted her of making threats to kill.

“The past is always with me, and I’m not saying I’m not going to be all right next week, but every day I wake, I say a prayer and say, ‘Please help me’, Morton said in the brief interview with The Times during The Odyssey promotion.
