Based on Diana Gabaldon’s novel series of the same name, the hit Starz historical drama premiered its eighth and final season on March 6. The series debuted in 2014, starring Caitríona Balfe as a British Army nurse named Claire who mysteriously time-travels from 1945 to 1743, where she falls in love with a Highland warrior named Jamie (Sam Heughan).

Executive producer Matthew B. Roberts told Entertainment Weekly in February 2026 that he knew how he wanted the series to end after it was greenlit for an eighth season.

"What we want is a really authentic season of Outlander," he explained. "We weren't going to try to make every episode a very special episode of Outlander. I wanted this to fit fully into the series, and I think we successfully have done that."

Season 8 of Outlander premiered on March 6, after fans had been waiting anxiously for it as season 7 of the series ended on a major cliffhanger.

Thankfully, Roberts told Entertainment Weekly that their burning questions — specifically pertaining to whether Claire and Jamie's stillborn child was still alive — would be answered at the start of season 8.

"I didn't want to make fans wait halfway through the season to get the answers," he said. "That one answer actually spawns about a thousand more questions, and those are what gets answered throughout the season."

There are 10 episodes in Outlander's eighth season. Though Gabaldon's ninth book in her Outlander series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, served as the inspiration for most of the show's final season, the author's 10th and final novel, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, has yet to be published.

As a result, executive producer Maril Davis said they had to come up with their own ending — one that she hopes serves as their "love letter to Outlander."

"It's tough to end the TV series before the book series concludes," Davis told Entertainment Weekly. "I think no matter what ending we have, it's going to be bittersweet."

As for the series' final episode, even its stars don't know how it ends. Roberts told Entertainment Weekly that he wrote and shot multiple endings to avoid spoilers.

"What we tried to do is answer as many questions as we could authentically," he said. "There's so many great storylines that get tied up — whether it's in a tight bow or a very loose bow, that's for the fans to judge."
