Roddy's decision on how to handle the ordeal ultimately led to the end of his radio career

Rod Roddy wasn't afraid to push the envelope.

Before becoming a member of The Price Is Right family, Roddy got his start in radio in Dallas. Friend and fellow announcer Randy West recently appeared on Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia, sharing some of Roddy's wilder moments and where they stood in the context of his career.

"This KLIF gig, you can draw a parallel with Howard Stern, because he went on just to make people crazy. And he got a lot of political heat from the local mayor and the establishment, but he would do shows from anything from, 'I'm doing tonight's showing in the nude. I suggest you listen in the nude,' which for the 1960s or whatever that was [racy]."

Roddy had a particularly infamous moment when interviewing a former Miss America, who was not identified in the episode but was previously reported as Maria Fletcher, which turned into a confrontation.

"She was now no longer during her reign as Miss America, but had been co-opted to be a spokesperson for Amway. So he booked her on the show, thinking she's Miss America, and she's only there to hype Amway because they're having some convention in Dallas, where this was. And he's asking questions about women's lib and 'Did you feel objectification running around in a bathing suit for a beauty pageant?' And all she wants to talk about is a new line of cosmetics from Amway," West shared.

The guest was adamant she only wanted to talk about Amway, which led to Roddy "raising his voice."

"Eventually, it escalated to where he poured a portion of a pitcher of ice water onto her head, but instead of her just being aghast and upset and whatever, she took her hot coffee and threw it in his face," West claimed.

"He hyperventilated and fell. He kind of passed out and hit the counter where the microphone is, so the audience heard a big clunk, and it fell on the floor. The engineer was, like, 'I don't know what to do.' And it took like 10 long seconds of silence until he got some music on. During that 10 seconds of dead air, it's untold how many people called the equivalent of 911, I don't even think that was a number in those days, but call the local authorities," West shared.

"Ambulance shows up and he's out cold. And she's there, 'I don't know. I don't know what happened. I didn't do anything,' whatever. They revive him, and he's fine. I mean, he just passed out, which can happen. He gets back on the radio and starts lacing into her," he continued.

"Long story short, she leaves. He rants on and on, and to get back at her, he did something that got him into deep trouble that eventually led to his cancellation of the show at KLIF in Dallas, which is, he said, 'This Miss America is at the Amway convention, which is being held at the hotel XYZ, and I have here in the notes to contact her. Here's the phone number of the hotel, and she's in room blank blank blank. And I suggest you call and say that she was outrageous on the show, and she should be embarrassed.' "

The decision ultimately cost Roddy the gig, leading him down the path to voice announcing.
